My top 3 TED talks on: Preparing for the year ahead

January 8, 2017

One of the things I’ve come to realise over the past year or so, is that I am completely out of touch with all things tv. When I’m at work, every day there is some conversation about the latest tv series, people exchanging opinions on their favourite scenes, plot twists and characters. It doesn’t end there either, as when I get home the conversation seems to continue between friends on facebook, twitter… etc.

TV for me is something I tend to put on in the background, for noise, distraction – I sort of dip in and out of shows – with no real desire to see any of it through (just knowing the ending is enough for me!).

What I have discovered though, is as my love for TV has diminished, in it’s place my love for indulging in TED videos has grown. In 2014 I was able to take my passion to the next level when I volunteered at my local TEDx event, TEDxSalford, and hopefully I will get the opportunity to get involved with TEDx again some time in the near future. But for now, I have to settle with expanding my mind through the internet instead.

If you don’t know what the devil I’m talking about when I say ‘TED’ (and no it is not the bad ass teddy who’s friends with Mark Wahlberg), its a non-profit organisation devoted to sharing ideas through short and often quite powerful talks. To know more I suggest you click here -> TED.com <- and check this baby out.

I spend my week saving headlines that interest me, I’ve found depending on my mood that interest differs greatly. But I have pretty much learnt something from every single video I have watched, and it’s for that reason that I’ve decided I’d like to share some of my favourites with you.

This month my interest has, like most people, been focused on goals, success – making a plan for a better future. I’ve been encouraging people to join in on my Davina inspired ‘This time next year‘ project so I thought why not choose TED talks that have helped me when I’m thinking of taking on challenges, a helping hand for setting and achieving goals.

So here are my top 3 TED talks to help you prepare for the year ahead:

Matt Cutts: Try something new for 30 days

If you’re new to TED, I’m easing you in with this one as this talk is no more than four minutes. Matt’s talk is perfect for those who are attempting to keep resolutions, or perhaps he’ll simply inspire you to think of something new to try just for the sake of it. I’m definitely up for trying this challenge at some point this year.

Amanda Palmer: The art of asking

This is not one of the first TED talks I watched, BUT it is one of the first TED talks that actually stuck with me. Amanda’s words have stuck with me even to this day, I remember her talk years down the line as what she said completely addressed an issue I’ve always struggled with. Trusting people. Accepting help.

Isabel Allende: How to live passionately – no matter your age

The famous novelist reminds us all that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you should never stop living passionately!

Can you recommend any other TED talks on the topic of setting up or achieving goals? Or do you have a suggestion for next months topic?
